Microsoft first became aware of the activation issue when a customer asked about the activation status. The Support Team decided to work on ways to reduce the activation issue. They realized that they would have to find a new way to get people to buy new licenses but also to keep existing licenses active on their systems. They believed that if they could convince people to buy new licenses, then they could encourage them to get the software they needed. Microsoft found this to be a challenge because there were too many factors that made people unhappy. Once they figured out how to satisfy all of these factors, they were able to find a new way to get customers to buy new licenses.

There are two different ways that Microsoft solved the activation issue. They first released activation redirects. These redirects allow customers to activate on a new machine that is already activated on another machine. In other words, the customer cannot activate at the same time. Then, in the late 90’s Microsoft released the activation redirect. This method is similar to the original type of redirect, except it involves a little more work on the part of the customer.

Both methods are successful and have been the cause of many new activation problems for a long time. The new system is still in use today and continues to be successful at solving activation issues. However, the old system does continue to provide support for people who have bought the older systems and will work for customers who want to buy new systems.
