Windows users have seen a strange trend lately: They’re seeing strange empty Chinese Folders Appearing on their desktop. As in, all your old Windows folders are now empty. And no, they aren’t just being destroyed by fire or being removed by an angry gremlin. Instead, they’re disappearing from the folder list!
The origin of this strange phenomenon is Microsoft’s new program, Windows Notifier. Windows Notifier monitors all the websites you visit and allows you to view those websites on your desktop. Windows Notifier, however, only listens to the sites you visit, and the folders you use, by default. If the folder it believes it needs to keep does not exist on your computer, it will not be listed as « used » on your desktop. (This is the problem with Windows Notifier not listening to your new Chinese Folders Appearing on your desktop!) So Windows Notifier will fail to send out notifications about your missing or recently deleted files. Windows notifies Windows users by downloading your favorite website’s JavaScript file, which then has the option of displaying its own empty window on your desktop, which you can close.
Windows Notifier’s empty folder bug can occur while you’re away from your computer. When you exit a webpage, the JavaScript code of the website you were browsing is immediately removed from your computer. Since the JavaScript files are downloaded at the same time you exit, the missing file in your web browser’s cache folder won’t show up for you. You can fix this by entering the following commands into the Windows Task Manager: press the Windows+R keys, and then type « services.msc », followed by « ClientForClients ». Click on the Service tab, click the « Startup » link, and then click « Startup Type ». Now click the « Services » link.
