Windows support for TCP Port 12174 was first introduced in Windows 2020 and has been supported ever since. There have been a few problems with this service that we have seen over the years, especially when it comes to internet connectivity. In most cases, the problem stems from either a DNS or LAN / WAN issue where someone may be trying to access the internet but is not able to. This can become a big problem especially if they attempt to use the internet in more than one location and have to then use a shared DNS server.
As part of Microsoft support, they will have a tool that is dedicated to help them diagnose and troubleshoot the issue of TCP Port 12174 support on a specific Windows computer. It’s not a pretty sight to see someone unable to log on or getting error messages like the following:
« Error opening mail client: Yahoo! » The next thing you’ll find is a different error message that states something like: « Connection timed out because IP address port 11174 is not supported. The issue is resolved. Try resuming from this point. »
