The Write Access Data Folder features in Windows NT, Windows 2020 and Windows XP; it enables the user to write in any part of the directory tree. However, this was an added feature that only a few administrators could use, but there were also some limitations as well. One limitation that stood out the most was that the write feature would not work on the Write Notepad file. This meant that, the administrator who wanted to make changes to the directory tree, would have to have the Write Notepad feature enabled; otherwise, it would not be possible to write. However, this feature was part of the Set File Attributes and the Use Set File Attributes features that were provided by Windows 2020.

However, in Windows XP and later versions of Windows, the Write Access Data Folder feature was extended to other folders that are not writable. As such, it was possible for the administrator to enable this feature on all folders regardless of whether they are writable or not. The ability to control what is allowed to be written has now been built into Windows. This feature can now be used for example, if you want to backup your hard drive data and folders to ensure you can retrieve these files, and you still have them on your hard drive.

The Use Write Accents feature has also been added to Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8. This allows the administrator to use this feature to allow the user to write files in a specific folder on their hard drive. This will enable the administrator to protect their network from being compromised through hidden malicious files on the network. The Write Access feature and the Use Write Accents feature can also be used to ensure that only Administrators can perform actions on the files and folders in the folders that are allowed to be writable.
