For many users of Windows XP, Error Code 646 seems to be a familiar one, and one which many people would have encountered before. It is however a common error message which is simply a Windows error which comes from missing system files and registry entries. The error code 646 has been widely used by many users of Windows, and there is also another version of the error code that Microsoft offers for consumers to get their hands on as well. This error is commonly seen in a lot of modern computers, which are left running the Windows XP operating system. Why does this happen and what can be done about it?

The reason why the Error Code 646 happens is because the Windows operating system is not able to find all the required files and settings on your computer. The files that the operating system needs are kept in the C: drive, but this drive is frequently changed by Windows itself, and when this happens, Windows is unable to read these files and therefore makes them inaccessible. Windows then makes the drives inaccessible, which leads to the Error Code 646 error, which most people with XP computers have experienced. The solution is to go into the Control Panel and then click on « View » > « Advanced System Settings ».

Here you will see a window called « Registry Editor » and after opening it you will need to click on the « Tools » option. After this you will need to click on the « Registry tab » > « New » > » Registry Item » and then enter a name for the new file that you create and then click « Next ». You will then need to ensure that you remember this new file name, so that you can easily find it again by right-clicking on it and selecting « Replace ». Once you have entered the new name, click « OK » and then click « Yes » to the « Verify changes » box, which will then appear. Click « Close » to save your changes and reboot your computer.
